Let’s Get Physicals
June 28, 2024
Family vacations, pool parties, cookouts, camping trips, fishing, bowling ‒ even making ice cream ‒ all might make your list of things to do with your kids this summer.
Make space for one more important item ‒ a sports physical for your child or children. At most schools, an annual exam ‒ known as a “sports physical” ‒ must happen before a child can participate in sports or various extracurricular activities.
The new seasons for school sports begin in August when many elementary, middle, and high school students return to the classroom. Since “back-to-school” is typically a busy time for families and a season all to itself, July is an ideal time to see a physician who specializes in children’s health to ensure your child is ready to safely compete in sports.
While some of what happens during a sports physical or back-to-school exam is dependent upon age, you can expect:
- A review of the child’s medical history
- A routine physical examination
- Immunizations as needed
- Completion of forms needed for sports or school participation
The physical examination portion of the visit is meant to determine if your child is safe to participate in sports. A provider will check your child’s height, weight, blood pressure, and heart rate; check the heart and lungs; screen vision; and examine muscles, bones, and joints.
There is a difference between sports and annual physicals. The sports physical focuses on suitability to participate in physical activities, while the annual physical reviews your child’s overall health, often looking at their social, behavioral, and physical well-being. There’s no need to make a separate appointment if your child needs both. Their doctor can provide both types of exams during one appointment.
Be sure to use such exams as an opportunity to ask questions about your child’s health and address any concerns you might have.
